Slips, Trips, falls and Ladder Safety

KNOW THE RULES FOR LADDER SAFETY

Ladders - even simple stepladders - can be very dangerous if you're not careful. Follow these basic rules of ladder safety:

  • Never use a ladder that is damaged in any way - always inspect it before you use it.

  • Always use safety features (safety feet, spreaders, locking devices), and don't use the ladder if safety features are missing or damaged.

  • Don't exceed the weight limit - there should be a label to show the maximum weight.

  • Face the ladder when going up or coming down.

  • Never try to move a ladder when you're on it.

  • Don't use a metal ladder when working near live electrical wires.

Extension ladders can be especially tricky:

  • Use the "4 to 1" Rule - the base of the ladder should be one foot from the wall for every four feet of distance between the ground and the support point.

  • The top the ladder would extend at least three feet from the support point.

  • Never place a ladder against a door, window, or other weak support point.

  • Stay centered between the ladder rails.

  • Don't work on a ladder if it's very windy.

FALLING CAN BE DEADLY

So preventing falls is essential!

Falls disable or kill thousands of people in the workplace each year, so stay alert for these hazards:

  • Slipping on wet, oily, or other slippery surfaces

  • Tripping over cords, boxes, and other objects

  • Falls on stairways, from ladders, or from other positions above the floor or ground

Know and use these commonsense safety guidelines to prevent falling accidents.

  • Walk, don't run

  • Keep walkways and passageways clear of tripping and falling hazards

  • Promptly clean up spills

  • Understand and practice ladder safety

  • Use fall protection equipment if required

  • Stay alert and pay attention to where you're walking

  • Don't take chances - use ladders or platforms, not boxes or chairs, to reach high places

  • Report all potential fall hazards to a supervisor.
